CEYLON BIRD CLUB FIELD TRIP ON 2nd MARCH 2014
A field trip was arranged for Members, Associate Members and Affiliates to visit a forest located within the Sri Lanka Army camp in Ambepussa. The trip was made possible courtesy of Affiliates Shehan and Daphne Perera.
Eleven Members and Affiliates participated. The highlights were a good sighting of a Rufous Woodpecker and its nest, a pair of Indian Three-toed Kingfishers and a Ceylon Trogon. A Rufous-bellied Hawk-Eagle and a Booted Eagle were among the raptors we saw. Many forest birds were observed.
The Army had placed notice boards informing the public of the importance of preserving the forest and its inhabitants and consequently the birds seemed undisturbed as they behaved naturally.
A total of 66 species was seen, with only one bird each of the two crow species - a good indication of the conditions prevailing.
A detailed report on this trip can be found in the “Activities” section of the CBC Website.
